Peter Thys

 

Peter Thys was born on 26 May 1962 in Mechelen. After obtaining a diploma in mathematics, he focused on music. At the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp he obtained first prizes solfege, music history and harmony. At the Royal Conservatory of Brussels Peter Thys won the first prizes bass with Maurice Aerts, chamber music with Florent van de Vondel, counterpoint and fugue with Rafaël D'Haene and master degree in music, music notation and composition with Rafaël D'Haene.

Since 1995 he teaches at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp and is connected part-time to the Music Academies in Mechelen, Sint-Pieters-Woluwe and Heist-op-den-Berg. Peter Thys won several awards, including the price for song from the Davidsfonds, the culture prize of the province of Antwerp, the price Gilson, the price of the Muizelhuisconcerten and price Cantabile. He was also composer in residence for the Emanon Ensemble. For this ensemble he wrote the work Icarus. In 2000 he wrote the compulsory work Reminders (for guitar) for the Axion Classics Competition.
