Rudi Tas

Rudi Tas5Rudi Tas is an award-winning composer of music for solo instruments, chamber music, choral music and orchestra. He studied at the Royal Conservatories of Brussels and Ghent, earning numerous diplomas in instrumental and theoretical subjects. His studies were crowned with the final diploma in composition.
Rudi Tas is one of the most awarded composers. It is striking how many works have been awarded prizes at national and international composition competitions. In 1979 he was laureate of the 'Nausikaä' composition competition for vocal music, in 1988 he received the prize of the Flemish Media Library for chamber music, in 1989 the Flor Baron Peeters prize for organ composition, in 1992 the Provincial Prize of East Flanders and in 1993 the B.A.P. prize of Sabam. His 'Symphonia da Requiem' for soprano solo, recitalist, solo choir, mixed choir and orchestra was nominated for the European AGEC Prize in 1992 and in 1996 it was decided in Switzerland to award him this prestigious prize for his choral work 'Flowers of Life'. In May 1998 he won first prize at the international composition competition in Tours for his 'La Chanson d'Eve'. The 'Sonata for Violin and Piano' was awarded the Jef Van Hoof Prize 2001. In 2013, he was awarded the 'Harmonic Originality Prize' for his 'Pie Jesu' (SSAATTBB) in the international composition competition of the IFCM (Chicago, US). Finally, he became the big winner in the ICCC 2016 international composition competition in Japan.
The path Rudi Tas takes in his composing career is based both on respect for tradition and knowledge of newer composing techniques. Depending on the task at hand, he will sometimes follow more familiar paths and sometimes be more progressive. In his most important works he integrates these two extremes into a unity. This is only possible thanks to a very solid craftsmanship and a great stylistic mastery. His stylish and inspired work, with an impeccable sense of balance in emotions and form, is universally highly regarded and performed by top national and international ensembles and top soloists.
In October 2017, he was elected a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Sciences and Arts.
