Bernard Baert

photo BaertBernard_1Bernard Baert was immersed in music from an early age, with his father serving as the director of the local music academy. He commenced his musical education at the academy in his hometown and later advanced his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent. There, he studied piano under Louis Pas and Claude Coppens, and composition with Roland Coryn, earning a higher diploma and teaching certificate in piano. He further honed his skills through summer courses with Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden, Daniel Blumenthal, and Robert Groslot.

From 1987 to 1997, Baert taught theory at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent. Currently, he is a piano instructor, ensemble coach, and accompanist at the Waregem Music Academy. As a composer, Baert focuses on developing musical processes, structuring, and evolving pure musical ideas. He often begins with a central affect, allowing the music's emotion to emerge organically, aiming to create expressive works that captivate and move listeners.

Baert's compositions have garnered significant recognition, including the SABAM Prize for his Woodwind Quintet in 1994 and the Jef Van Hoof Prize for his Piano Trio in 1995. Post-1995, he adopted a more straightforward compositional style to enhance the immediate joy of performance. Since 2003, he has primarily composed educational pieces for music academies.
