Walter Mertens

 Walter Mertens (b. 1965) received his percussion diplomas at the Flemish music conservatory in Antwerp and the Lemmens Institute in Leuven.

He is currently attached to the Schoten Academy where he teaches percussion and group music.

He is regularly invited for master classes, workshops, artistic support and as a jury member for competitions for soloists and ensembles at home and abroad, including Vlamo; APK (Antwerp percussion competition); Perculliria (Spain); Bumfest & Temsig Competition (Slo), International Percussion Workshops Gdansk (Pl), WAubonsie Valley High School (Chicago Us), Ivana Summer Percussion Festival (Hr); festival Coulours of Rhythm (Serb); Universal Marimba Competition & Festival (Be).

As a composer Walter Mertens focuses both on compositions for percussion (various methods, solo and ensemble literature, chamber music) and compositions for Symphonic music, chamber music, musical and solo repertoire.

Several compositions received prizes in competitions or were commissions for national and international competitions and manifestations a.o. for WMC in Kerkrade (Nl); Temsig-Slovenian Music Competition for Youth (SLO); EMJ Neerpelt & Vlamo (B).

His compositions have become known far beyond our borders and can be found in all of Europe, America and Asia. Most of his music has been published by various national and international publishers such as: Golden River Music (B), Beurskens (NL), Southern Percussion (UK), Alfonce Productions (FR), Svitzer (DK), C. Alan Publications (US).
