About the piece:
Many migrant stories are harrowing, and it is almost obvious to make a dramatic work about people leaving everything behind to face an uncertain future. However, it has become a story about hope. Isn't that what drives everyone? 
 
The Red Star Line was a shipping company that maintained regular service between Antwerp and New York (or Philadelphia) between 1873 and 1935. Millions of European migrants were fleeing pogroms and poverty and wanted to try their luck in the USA. There were offices all over Europe where you could book a trip that started in Antwerp (Kattendijkdok) and ended at Ellis Island. The Red Star Line carried one and a half million passengers. There was hardly any room on board, but you were taken care of: meals, entertainment and medical care were provided. The atmosphere there was optimistic and full of anticipation.
