In The Drum Machine, emphasis is placed on the creation of beautiful melodic phrases. Numerous technical objectives appear in it, but it remains very straightforward.

At the beginning of percussion training, the student comes into contact with the wide variety of rhythmics. This item has since been developed in the volume Percussion à la Carte. At a later stage, it becomes clear that each instrument (drum, timpani ...) also has its own technical characteristics. The Drum Machine can therefore be considered a further elaboration of this aspect. After all, the dexterity over different instruments of the drum kit is an important part in the percussionist's training.

The subtitle Solo Study indicates that the works can be performed at auditions (solo) and that they are also very engaging as study material (study). It is also possible to perform these works without piano accompaniment. Thus one plays the work leaving out the solo piano parts.
