For 4 horns and organ - score 10 p. & parts.
Georg Friedrich Händel (1685 - 1759) made frequent use of older musical material in his new compositions. For the Overture to his famous Music for the Royal Fireworks (1749) he re-used a fully sketched Concerto in D Major HWV 335a for two oboes, bassoon, two trumpets, four horns, timpani and strings, written around 1746. The initial version was also the basis for the more concise and elaborate two-movement Concerto a due Cori in F major HWV 335b, also dated around 1746. This work is scored for one group of two solo horns and strings, and a second group of two horns, two oboes, and bassoon. The organ serves as the basso continuo instrument.
In an arrangement for four horns and organ, this two-movement Concerto in F is an effective opening piece suitable for almost any occasion. The organist can use different registrations to suggest the effect of a double choir. The two pairs of horns can be positioned on opposite sides of the organ. Just as in the Music for the Royal Fireworks, they may also be doubled.
In 2025, we mark the 340th anniversary of the birth of Georg Friedrich Händel. This anniversary provides an ideal opportunity to acknowledge his musical legacy and bring his influential works back into focus.
