Hans Aerts

Hans Aerts studied at the Music Academy of Mol clarinet and piano. After obtaining government medals for these two instruments, he studied at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp. There he was taught by Walter Boeykens (clarinet), Marc Verhaegen (harmony) and August Verbesselt (analysis). Afterwards he continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he followed counterpoint and fugue with Rafaël D'Haene. Finally, at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven, he studied composition with Piet Swerts.

Several of his works were awarded. He received in 1984 an honorable mention in the Clarinet Choir Composition Contest of the University of Maryland. In 1993, 1995 and 2005 he won the Cantabile Composition with successively the piano works Berceuse triste - Canzonetta (1993), Rondino (1995) and Promenade (2005). In 1999, his song 'Tranen' on a text by Guido Gezelle, for soprano, clarinet in Bb and piano (1998) was selected by the composition contest of the city of Roeselare.


In both 1996 and 1997 Hans Aerts wrote the obligatory works respectively for harp and violin for the National Competition Axion Classics of Dexia Bank. These were the works At the lake or Connemara for harp (1995) and Contemplazione for violin and piano (1996). In 2004 he wrote for the same match Concertino da camera for woodwinds combined with piano: flute, clarinet, oboe, alto saxophone and bassoon. The piano work Sentimental Waltz was nominated in 2003 in the ISME-composition and released on CD.

Currently Hans Aerts active as a composer and as professor of clarinet and chamber music at the Academy of Music, Drama and Dance in Turnhout.

Peter Thys

 

Peter Thys was born on 26 May 1962 in Mechelen. After obtaining a diploma in mathematics, he focused on music. At the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp he obtained first prizes solfege, music history and harmony. At the Royal Conservatory of Brussels Peter Thys won the first prizes bass with Maurice Aerts, chamber music with Florent van de Vondel, counterpoint and fugue with Rafaël D'Haene and master degree in music, music notation and composition with Rafaël D'Haene.

Since 1995 he teaches at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp and is connected part-time to the Music Academies in Mechelen, Sint-Pieters-Woluwe and Heist-op-den-Berg. Peter Thys won several awards, including the price for song from the Davidsfonds, the culture prize of the province of Antwerp, the price Gilson, the price of the Muizelhuisconcerten and price Cantabile. He was also composer in residence for the Emanon Ensemble. For this ensemble he wrote the work Icarus. In 2000 he wrote the compulsory work Reminders (for guitar) for the Axion Classics Competition.

Luc Mishalle

 

photo MishalleLuc2Luc Mishalle (b. 1953) is a musician with a very quirky track. From 1976 he works as a musician and composer for theater as: Welfare State International, Emergency Exit Arts (GB), Dogtroep (En), New International Scene Tiedrie and (B). At the same time he plays music in the jazz band 'St. hell freezes over (En).

From 1983 he works primarily on music of minorities, and he founded a series of groups which acclaimed successes in the whole of European: Belçikal, Raï Express, Marakbar ... He also plays with all the big names in improvised music and he gets several commissions from Flemish institutions Monty, Forward, City on the River, CCB, Walpurgis, Zuiderpershuis ...

Since 1988 he is also active in contemporary music: he plays 10 years Blindman!, And occasionally in groups as Ictus and QO2. In recent years he returned regularly as a composer and / or performer at theaters like the music LOD, The Wharf, HETPALEIS, theater Step (B), Ro-theater, DNA ... (NL).

He has published in various journals and books and realized a dozen CDs and LPs.

Since 1998 he has been artistic director of MET-X (formerly: vzw The Chalk Circle) and develops to Al-Harmoniah, Fanfarrah, Aywa!, Marockin 'Brass ....

Henk De Graaf

photo DeGraafHenkHenk De Graaf, born in Spakenburg, studied at the conservatory in Utrecht under the guidance of Jos d'Hondt. In 1970, he graduated with honors, obtaining all diplomas. Three years later, in 1973, he was awarded the "Prix d'Excellence." His remarkable skill led to his appointment as the principal clarinetist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in 1975. With the orchestra, he performed acclaimed concerts featuring the works of Mozart and Von Weber, including Lindpainter's concerto during an American tour.

Additionally, De Graaf spent several years performing with the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and participating in various chamber music ensembles. One of his notable CD projects included recordings of Romantic clarinet trios by Mozart, Schumann, and Bruch, as well as the clarinet sonatas op. 120 by Brahms, alongside pianist Daniel Wayenberg.

Throughout his career, Henk De Graaf released numerous CDs. On the occasion of his 25th anniversary as the principal clarinetist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, he released a CD featuring Mozart's clarinet concerto KV. 622 among other works. He also recorded a CD of chamber music by Von Weber, Baermann, Crusell, and Spohr, as well as a collection of clarinet trios by Beethoven, Glinka, Brahms, and Zemlinsky, again collaborating with pianist Daniel Wayenberg. In 2008, he released three CDs, one of which featured all clarinet quartets by Crusell in collaboration with members of the Daniel Quartet. He also recorded clarinet quintets by Brahms and Mozart with the Daniel Quartet and a CD with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Wind Ensemble featuring the Octet Partitas by Krommer.

In addition to his performance career, Henk De Graaf served as the principal clarinet instructor at the Rotterdam University of Music and Theater and the Amsterdam University of the Arts for 25 years. He also conducts and assists Dutch conductor Jan Stulen with the Dutch Promenade Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of Flanders, among other engagements. Furthermore, he regularly conducts masterclasses in France.

Tinne De Groot

Tinne De Groot is a teacher solfeggio and vocals at the Academy for Music and Word in Berchem, as well as pedagogic coordinator. In a previous life, she studied for educator. Later, she studied recorder, music theory and pedagogy at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp.

During 6 years, Tinne De Groot was the conductor of 'Kolor', a children's choir in Mechelen. Thanks to Tinne's efforts, the number of members increased considerably.
Since 2008 Tinne conducts Arti Ragazzi (children's choir) and Arti'sJok (youth choir). Together with Ronny Plovie and Koen Laukens, they performed productions such as 'Oliver Twist' and 'Brundibar'.
Recently, she was active in the Moonrize Productions, and in October 2009 she started with 'Amused', together with her husband Ronnie Plovie. More than once they played together at 'Open Monumentendag' and in 2007, they were invited to 'Flemish Spring' in Debrecen (Hungary).
