After studying at the Conservatoire d'Arlon, Yorick went on to study the concert flute at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles and the Conservatoire d'Esch-sur-Alzette (L), where he obtained diplomas in instrumentation/orchestration, pedagogy/methodology and concert flute. He then furthered his training with various flautists, notably at the Philharmonie de Luxembourg. A scholarship holder of the Horlait-Dapsens foundation and the Luxembourg European competition, Yorick went on to win a prize at the Sinfionietta competition in Brussels, as well as first prize at the Dexia classic competition, a gold medal at the Luxembourg young soloists competition and second prize at the Brussels Royal Conservatoire laureates competition, which enabled him to perform at the 'Académia Belgica' in Rome.
He has played with the Orchestre des Jeunes de la Grande Région, the Brussels Chamber Orchestra, Le Summer Orchestra Luxembourg, the Orchestre National de Belgique, the Orchestre d'Harmonie de la Musique Militaire Grand-Ducale, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg and is second flautist with the Orchestre d'Harmonie du Luxembourg. Yorick teaches the flute at the UGDA (L) music schools and is a lecturer at the Esch-sur-Alzette conservatoire.
Many new arrangements by Yorick will soon appear in our Classical Wind Editions series!
Huug Steketee (born in 1959, Zeeland) grew up in a musical family, where his father was a talented amateur cornet player in the local brass band. On Sunday afternoons, the sounds of British brass band music filled the air, and his father's collection included legendary recordings from the late fifties and early sixties. At the age of eleven, Huug began taking music lessons and was already playing with two brass bands by the time he was twelve. His talent did not go unnoticed, and at the age of eighteen, he left Zeeland to study at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam under the guidance of Klaas Kos, the principal trumpet player of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. In 1982, he successfully auditioned for the North Holland Philharmonic Orchestra, and four years later, he joined the Residentie Orchestra, where he was solo trumpeter from 1986 to 2020.
In 2010, Huug bid farewell to his job as a teacher at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. His reason was the perceived decline in the quality of conservatory education, which he found unacceptable. However, Huug remained determined to change the future of music. He now serves as the conductor of Delta Brass Zeeland and is actively involved in the "Delta Plan," aimed at nurturing and retaining musical talent within the province. His love for music extends to a social dimension, and he laments the diminishing musical engagement among young people. Making music brings people together and holds profound social significance, a value cherished by Huug. With a rich career in music, Huug Steketee has passed on his passion to his daughter, Femke, who, in turn, plays in the renowned Syrène Saxophone Quartet and frequently substitutes for the Residentie Orchestra.
In 2016, Huug Steketee embraced the challenge of composing and recording a short tune every day, sharing them on his Facebook page under the name "Sté Tuned." These "Tjoentjes," as he affectionately calls them, shed light on all facets of the brass world. The positive responses were overwhelming and sparked demands for sheet music of these tunes, allowing other brass players to study and perform them. In summary, Huug Steketee epitomizes a life devoted to the trumpet, and his passion for music shines not only in his playing but also in his efforts to enrich and inspire the musical world.
