Collection Herman Jeurissen

In the world of horn and brass ensemble music from the 18th and 19th centuries, original high-quality ensemble repertoire appears to be scarce. Additionally, students and advanced amateurs are rarely given the opportunity to perform important Romantic symphonic works by Bruckner, Mahler etc. and Wagner's great operas in their original versions. Orchestral part studies with only the original parts, and above all, a lot of rest are not always inspiring.

For this reason, throughout his extensive career as a horn pedagogue, Herman Jeurissen wrote a considerable number of arrangements. These include shorter compositions by the great masters, allowing for an accessible introduction to their style and writing. Certain piano compositions, such as Liszt's paraphrase on Mendelssohn's 'Der Jäger Abschied' and Wagner's pianosonate in A-flat, are almost naturally suited for versions arranged for horn ensemble and brass ensemble. Rarely or never performed men's choir works by Bruckner are given a second life in this manner. Fragments with prominent horn and brass passages from Weber and Wagner's operas have been merged into fully-fledged, independent compositions, retaining their impact even without knowledge of the original works.
With a similar purpose, works for horn and piano/organ have also been created. These works, idiomatically suitable for transcription for horn and organ, complement the scarce original repertoire. The pieces for horn and piano primarily serve as preliminary studies for the standard repertoire, for instance, Schumann's 'Scenes from Manfred' as preparation for the Adagio und Allegro op. 70. The fundamental principle is always to ensure that the transcriptions fit idiomatically and sound as if they were original compositions.

Each of these works is accompanied by a preface, providing historical context and describing the significance of the transcription. This context enhances a deeper understanding of the music and offers a rich experience for both musicians and the audience.

Huug Steketee

300px Huug SteketeeHuug Steketee (born in 1959, Zeeland) grew up in a musical family, where his father was a talented amateur cornet player in the local brass band. On Sunday afternoons, the sounds of British brass band music filled the air, and his father's collection included legendary recordings from the late fifties and early sixties. At the age of eleven, Huug began taking music lessons and was already playing with two brass bands by the time he was twelve. His talent did not go unnoticed, and at the age of eighteen, he left Zeeland to study at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam under the guidance of Klaas Kos, the principal trumpet player of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. In 1982, he successfully auditioned for the North Holland Philharmonic Orchestra, and four years later, he joined the Residentie Orchestra, where he was solo trumpeter from 1986 to 2020.

In 2010, Huug bid farewell to his job as a teacher at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. His reason was the perceived decline in the quality of conservatory education, which he found unacceptable. However, Huug remained determined to change the future of music. He now serves as the conductor of Delta Brass Zeeland and is actively involved in the "Delta Plan," aimed at nurturing and retaining musical talent within the province. His love for music extends to a social dimension, and he laments the diminishing musical engagement among young people. Making music brings people together and holds profound social significance, a value cherished by Huug. With a rich career in music, Huug Steketee has passed on his passion to his daughter, Femke, who, in turn, plays in the renowned Syrène Saxophone Quartet and frequently substitutes for the Residentie Orchestra.

In 2016, Huug Steketee embraced the challenge of composing and recording a short tune every day, sharing them on his Facebook page under the name "Sté Tuned." These "Tjoentjes," as he affectionately calls them, shed light on all facets of the brass world. The positive responses were overwhelming and sparked demands for sheet music of these tunes, allowing other brass players to study and perform them. In summary, Huug Steketee epitomizes a life devoted to the trumpet, and his passion for music shines not only in his playing but also in his efforts to enrich and inspire the musical world.
